The internet is positively buzzing with news around the next wave of Unified Computing innovations launched Sept.4th, and these are just a few examples.

Highlights include innovation in three key areas:

  • Cloud-Scale Computing
  • Edge-Scale Computing
  • Data-Intensive Computing and Core Data Center Applications

Cloud-Scale Computing

Cisco UCS M-Series Modular Servers deliver breakthrough levels of operational efficiency for cloud service providers and enterprise customers who increasingly rely on scale-out application architectures.

The UCS M-Series leapfrogs conventional scale-out system designs, leveraging Cisco’s exclusive, next-generation Virtual Interface Card technology to create the industry’s first truly disaggregated server architecture.

In addition, the Cisco UCS C3160 Rack Server, featuring high-capacity local disk storage, is ideal for distributed data analytics and object stores, unstructured data repositories, and media streaming and transcoding.

Edge-Scale Computing
With the introduction of the UCS Mini, we’ve optimized unified computing for remote sites, branch offices, and small IT environments. This all-in-one solution delivers servers, storage, and networking in a compact form factor that’s easy to roll out and operate.

For customers with large numbers of remote sites or branches, UCS systems management enables operations and policy control of distributed computing at massive scale. UCS Mini also creates a new entry point for unified computing for small IT organizations, bringing all of the benefits of UCS simplicity and IT automation to a new segment of customers.

Data-Intensive Computing and Core Data Center Applications
Fourth-generation UCS Servers and UCS Director products deliver power and control for intensive data analytics and application acceleration.

The UCS B200 M4 Bade Server, C220 M4, and C240 M4 Rack Servers continue our tradition of world-record application performance across a diverse range of workloads. UCS Director Express for Big Data creates a seamless management and automation environment that unifies big data and enterprise applications.

Expanded partnership with Red Hat

After years of successful collaboration around UCS, we’re expanding our partnership with Red Hat to accelerate joint engineering and product development around OpenStack, Application Centric Infrastructure and Cisco Intercloud.

OpenStack is an important part of Cisco’s strategy to meet the needs of enterprise customers looking for more flexible cloud environments. We’re currently working together to develop OpenStack plugins and installation tools to deliver seamless security and governance for hybrid cloud deployments. We’re also collaborating to standardize key protocols and interfaces in the ACI architecture.

We’re also teaming with Red Hat to introduce Cisco UCS Integrated Infrastructure for Red Hat OpenStack, which will provide customers the core building blocks they need to simplify their journey to the cloud. This fully integrated and validated set of reference architectures for private cloud deployments will accelerate deployment time while lowering risk, and provide consistent network and security policies across private and hybrid cloud environments.
