Speed and Multi-screens are Key for the Next Generation TV Viewing

2 min read

We know that viewers today are moving away from the traditional TV viewing format. Advanced technologies have transformed the consumer experience and TV viewing has become accessible at a click of button, no matter where you are.

Cloud has brought in fundamental changes both on the consumer and the operator front, For consumers – It has added convenience by extending TV to all forms of screens, letting viewers stream live TV and video-on-demand (VoD) to their personal devices anytime, anywhere and on any access network. Cloud DVR and Time Shift TV services are prime examples of how web-like convenience is now a reality for TV viewers. For Service Providers – Cloud has brought in flexibility & scalability to launch newer services at web-speed, make frequent updates, and elastically scale the system in synch with subscriber growth.

While adaptation of Cloud has been a global phenomenon – more prevalent in North America and Europe – In India, we are seeing a revolution through massive digitization of Cable networks. The success of initial phases has energized the whole ecosystem. Not just the software and network technology providers, but also the OEMs, are now coming up with innovative and upgraded products to capitalize on this transition.

Abundant developments have been witnessed in the current video space across cloud, network and clients.

  • Cloud, as I mentioned earlier has enabled services to be speedily deployed in a matter of minutes, compared to the weeks or even months previously taken.
  • On the client front, there is an increased demand for set-top boxes in the pay-TV industry. India is also experiencing additional digital video recorder (DVR) penetration with a keen interest in high definition, ultra HD (4K) and multi-screen facilities, given that consumers now have bigger screens and more than one device with internet connectivity.
  • On the network side, cable TV digitization and high speed internet are the important factors; DOCSIS 3.0 for cable or the 4G or 3G for mobile. DOCSIS, the facilitator for broadband acceleration in India, has transformed the cable and broadband sector, providing scalable, speedy and high-value services to millions of subscribers all over the country.

The study recently carried out by Media Partners Asia says that India’s pay-TV industry is set to grow from $7.4 billion in 2013 to $12.3 billion by 2018, with an average annual growth rate of 11%. In that case, by 2023, India’s pay-TV industry will be generating approximately $16.4 billion in revenue.

  2. Hello sir the information provided by you is appreciated. I would also like to share some information.Commercial TV systems have been superior considerably over the ancient times. CRT TVs have been substituted by flat panel TVs like LCD TVs which might, in turn, be opposed by the recent display panels like AMOLED TVs. The usability of a TV is unlimited with fast development in IT technologies and a few more smart features have been introduced to the most recent smart TVs. The video quality has furthermore considerably enhanced with an increment of the pixel density from standard definition to ultra high definition which charms the latest interest in TV industry. Therefore, a next generation TV requests a variety of technologies from circuits/systems, display panel to image and signal processing algorithms.
