Cisco helps Eastlink harness cloud, gives customers anywhere access with Videoscape
2 min read
With devices like smartphones and tablets it has never been easier to take our favourite music, applications and videos on the go. Mobility, powerful new devices and even social media are changing the way we consume content. As consumers we might not stop to think about the technology ‘behind the cover’ that makes this possible, but at Cisco that’s our job.
We’re always thinking of innovative ways to help service providers deliver their content. The appetite for anywhere, anytime consumption is forcing service providers to change their digital delivery offerings quickly, a trend being helped by a shift to cloud services that increase access and availability for users.
How ubiquitous has cloud become? We recently released the second annual Global Cloud Index Forecast, and the predictions were staggering. The Forecast showed global cloud traffic will grow from 683 exabytes of annual traffic in 2011 to 4.3 zettabytes by 2016 – a sixfold increase.
That’s 4,300,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes of data moving through clouds.
Cloud traffic is actually the fastest-growing component of data centre traffic and in 2011, North America generated the most cloud traffic of any region globally, with 261 exabytes annually. It’s time to acknowledge that cloud has moved beyond niche status and will remain a legitimate way for businesses and consumers to access information for years to come.
One thing is clear about the cloud. As service providers navigate this new landscape where cloud dominates, they need effective tools to send direct and cloud-based content to consumers’ mobile devices. Cisco Videoscape harnesses the potential of cloud to bring live and on-demand access to video content across network devices, so you can watch that episode you missed of your favourite sitcom while you wait for your plane. I’ve written more about Videoscape here.
That brings me to some news, which I’m thrilled to share with you. Last week we announced that Eastlink is using Cisco Videoscape to power its new mobile solution, Eastlink To Go. This is big news for Eastlink customers, as they will be able to use Eastlink To Go to access programming on-demand. They will also be the first in Canada to access live content from Eastlink TV on their mobile devices and computers.
The best part about this announcement isit’s powered by an end-to-end Cisco Videoscape solution. For Eastlink customers, this means optimal content quality no matter what device they use. And by using Videoscape as its platform, Eastlink can now combine video with content from other sources to create a unique experience that customers can’t get anywhere else.
Terrific news for Eastlink and its customers.
