What is it really like to be a Cisco Apprentice?

3 min read

Cisco apprentices contribute to all aspects of the business, providing helpful support across roles and embodying the spirit of the organisation. Here is a collection of answers to questions from current apprentices, showcasing how they can develop their unique skillset what they can gain from completing a degree apprenticeship with one of the global industry leaders in technology.

What made you want to pursue a degree apprenticeship?

(Jack Merriman) I already have a degree in Broadcast Journalism, but when I graduated, I struggled a lot to get hired into the industry. Most companies were asking for years of experience on top of the degree which I did not have at the time.

With the degree apprenticeship, I am not only getting the academic knowledge from the degree, but I am also getting four years on the job training which will make me very employable when I graduate.

(Josh Dearden) The degree apprenticeship is a great opportunity to get a foot into an exciting industry which I wanted to join- the opportunity to get a fully funded degree paid for along with 4 years of experience at a big tech company was an amazing opportunity to say the least. I personally attended university for a year but realised it wasn’t for me after 1 year, just proves that there is a way into the industry for everybody!

What advice would you give for individuals considering an apprenticeship?

(Samah Zamir) My advice for those considering an apprenticeship would be to embrace the learning process, and don’t hesitate to seek guidance and ask questions as it is a vital part of the process. Embrace every challenge and seize every opportunity that comes your way, no matter how unfamiliar or intimidating it may seem.

What skills and knowledge have you gained through your time as an apprentice?

(Harvey Wilson) During my time as an apprentice, I have gained various skills and knowledge. One of my most recognisable skills I have adopted is communication, as my apprenticeship is mainly sales based, I have been able to step out of my comfort zone when it comes to talking and networking with new people.

My knowledge within the Technology and networking industry has improved massively. Before joining the apprenticeship, I never had the knowledge I have today, and even with only 6 months of experience my knowledge of Cisco and general networking has improved.

How has the apprenticeship contributed to your professional growth and development?

(Chloe Clinton) The Cisco apprenticeship has provided me with a wide variety of opportunities that have supported my professional growth and development. I have been able to gain hands-on experience with different teams in the business alongside networking with employees from all around the world. Working closely with experienced team members has provided me with access to inspiring mentors and constructive feedback to help me progress. I have enjoyed being a part of Cisco’s company culture whilst also studying towards my degree.

How does your apprenticeship align with your long-term career goals?

(Nabilah Rahman) The apprenticeship helps me reach my long-term career goals as I can join teams or stretch projects that align with my goals, as well as having mentors who are in roles, I can see myself in one day. This exposure, insight, and experience gives me more confidence and knowledge that I can leverage to help me get to where I want.

What is your favourite part of the apprenticeship?

(Amy Boyle) The people I have met throughout my apprenticeship is one of the highlights of my journey. Selecting an apprenticeship gives you the chance to connect with people who are well-established in the industry and who can provide you with support while you are learning and early in career.  You also have the opportunity to network with fellow apprentices who share your interests and career aspirations. These relationships often prove beneficial in the future for friendships, mentorships, and employment prospects!

What would you like people to know about the benefits of apprenticeships?

(Benjamin Blackburn) It would be great if more people knew just how much you can learn from shadowing, doing and learning. University is great as it provides the foundational knowledge (and being able to get a degree without the student debt is awesome) but then being able to put that knowledge into practice and gain experience is really a no brainer.

As seen by these responses, joining Cisco as an apprentice is a great experience that enriches all aspects of your professional profile.
