This week in mobility – October 24th

October 24, 2014

We’ve seen a healthy dose of announcements this week in the mobility world – Google has unveiled its new smartphone and tablet models , due to land in stores next month, and Facebook has announced its latest feature safety check, which enables users to make sure that their friends are safe during disasters like earthquake or tsunamis.

In fact, we’ve got more mobility stories than you can shake a stick at this week – here’s our pick of the bunch:

  • Tourists landing in the UK are now more connected than ever – a new partnership between The Cloud and Mastercard is giving visitors access to 22,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots across the country. The MasterCard Priceless London Wi-Fi app will also send users deals and promotions based on their geolocation, and also includes a GPS locator to direct users to the nearest Wi-Fi hotspots.
  • A string of new stats reveal that employers are embracing flexible mobile working more than ever before. A survey of business owners and employees by Samsung Business Enterprise revealed that more than a quarter of office workers would choose a flexible working package over a pay rise. Similar research by Regus, meanwhile, found that 81% of respondents see working flexibly as a way to boost productivity – up from 74% last year.
  • New research has uncovered that over a third of us are guilty of stealing broadband off our neighbours. The research, conducted by broadband provider Hyperoptic, revealed that 29% of people surveyed had hacked into private networks by guessing personal information like pets’ names, licence plate numbers and birthdays. It also found, somewhat surprisingly, that those aged 35 and 44 are the most likely to tap into a neighbour’s connection – leaving the neighbour, no doubt, a bit hacked off.

What do you think about this week’s mobility round-up? Could Facebook’s new safety check be the starting point for a string of similar features? Have you ever latched onto a neighbour’s network? You’re in good company if so!
