Another week, another mountain of magnificent mobility stories to keep me occupied! Let’s get cracking – Apple is set to reveal more details about its highly-anticipated smart watch at a media event on March 9, a sure sign that the technology is on track for its April release.
Visa Europe, meanwhile, has announced the launch of new security technology. This claims to make mobile payments safer than ever before by using virtual tokens, rather than account details, to cut the risk of fraud.
In other news, research around mobile workforces by Barco has revealed that video conferencing quality (38%) and wireless access to company networks (31%) are the factors having the most impact on mobile working.
Here’s my other top mobility picks for the week:
- Google has made exciting inroads into the enterprise world by announcing of a set of mobile device management standards and security under its Android for Work banner. It also revealed a string of partnerships with the likes of BlackBerry, Sony , HTC and more to support its enterprise credentials.
- Researchers at the University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) have achieved record-breaking speeds while testing 5G data connections. They managed to hit one terabit per second – thousands of times faster than current data connections. This speed would enable a user to download a file 100 times bigger than a movie in just three seconds.
- Research by V3 has identified Apple and Google as the champions of enterprise mobility, with 57% of organisations in the UK supporting iPhones and iPads and 52% supporting Android smartphones and tablets. 13% said they support both – this means that Apple devices are enabled in seven out of 10 firms, while Android is present in around two-thirds.
