This Week in Mobility – December 5 2014

December 5, 2014

Forget stamp duty and King Richard III, this week has been all about one thing – mobility! For starters, NFU Scotland has urged the UK Government to work harder on providing improved mobile coverage north of the border, where national targets may not address marginal areas. The Government is already assisting BT to deliver a £410m broadband initiative for Scotland, including 250miles of subsea fibre connecting islands.

Here’s my pick of the week’s other mobility news:

  • Research by the Post Office revealed that 32% of us are planning to buy presents this Christmas on our phone or tablet, with 13% shopping during our daily commute.
  • EE announced plans to connect the countryside by using micro-network technology to bring 4G to 1,500 rural towns and villages. The roll out, which aims to be completed by 2017, will attach mini antennas to buildings instead of laying cables and masts to ensure reliable voice coverage and mobile broadband.
  • Nurses at the London North West NHS trust are reaping the benefits of mobility. The Vodafone TotalMobile solution replaces a paper-based system for 245 nurses and integrates with the existing patient record system to make patient data accessible via tablet and mobile when working in the community.
  • New figures by consumer campaigner Which? shown that since their launch two years ago, super-fast 4G services have experienced dramatic drops in speed due to congestion and over-subscription. The findings also revealed that while London has the fastest and most reliable phone signal, those in Wales, parts of the South West, the East Midlands and North East experience inferior service for the same price.

We want to hear your thoughts on this week’s mobility news – are you tired of underwhelming phone signal and slow 4G? Do you see the NHS ditching the paper any time soon? Let me know by tweeting @CiscoUKI or @GrahamFranklin. See you next week!
