This week in mobility – April 10, 2015

1 min read

Phew, it’s been a busy week of progress in mobility! Mobile users (especially iPhone users… j/k, Apple!) will be excited to hear that scientists have developed a mobile battery that could be fully charged in as little as one minute. Meanwhile, EE are now offering some customers wi-fi enabled calls to combat mobile signal notspots; Who needs taller phone masts!? EE are not the first to offer such a service, but say their scheme is ‘seamless’ as users are not required to do anything to enable the switch between connections.

Here is a wrap up of other highlights in mobility this week:

  • The average British household now owns 7.4 internet devices, with 4 in 10 households buying a new tablet in the last year. According to a YouGov poll 7 in 10 households now own at least one tablet, while 19% have two and 11% own three or more.
  • Periscope is taking the social-sphere by storm. The live streaming app, despite being currently only available on iPhone, seems to have overshadowed the success of competitor, Meerkat, and is dominating the live social video streaming market. It will be interesting to see how adoption of this emerging mobile video format takes off.
  • Research by business advisors PWC found that, across the UK, 56% would consider wearing a smartwatch issued by their employer if their data helped improve things such as working hours, stress levels and where they can work from. There are interesting regional variations, with those in Northern Ireland much keener than workers in Scotland.

Will you be jumping on the Periscope bandwagon? Have you counted up the number of devices in your home? Share your thoughts by leaving a comment below, or tweeting @Graham Franklin or @CiscoUKI.
