Swishing cows tails and my new focus

October 28, 2015

Anyone who has heard me speak will know that I love statistics, so it probably comes as no surprise that my discussions are turning more and more to Analytics.

So, what is Analytics … Analytics is the discovery and communication of meaningful patterns in data.

As we know, we are on the cusp of a data explosion, as 50 billion devices are predicted to be connected by 2020. Only today the BBC were informing me about a sensor on a cows tail (Moocall) that is gathering 600 pieces of data a second and has a 95% success rate of when a cow is most likely to give birth. Resulting in a saved calf and accruing the farmer €1,000 within 12 months.

Analytics is not new I hear you say. Agreed, yet, 99.5% of today’s data is stored at a considerable cost to your organisation, yet isn’t analyzed. So how about we take some baby steps and see what meaningful patterns we can find within your data today.

Disengaged employees cost an organisation one third of every € they are paid. Needless to say, our COO tracks and reports Cisco employee engagement every quarter. To date this information is derived from surveys which can be very subjective, yet the technology that you use on a day to day basis can tell you so much more.

In a quad-generation workforce, let your Cisco equipment tell you what is working and what isn’t, cross generation. Your collaboration platform can tell you who is embracing the technology and who is potentially being isolated. Your wifi platform – if placed correctly – can inform you how to maximise your working environment to ensure people sit together and promote a feeling of inclusion, team work and comradery. Personally I have felt at my loneliest at our European HQ’s, where I am surrounded by hundreds of colleagues yet not talking to anyone. Imagine if analytics could understand where I am located and pull from my social sites to let me know if any of my network were in the vicinity, or even better, introduce me to likeminded colleagues.
