In the past 40 years, we have lost more than half of our wildlife populations. According to recent studies from the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), 95% of wild tigers have disappeared in the last century with just 3,200 left alive in 2010. Elephant populations are also in huge decline, with 39% disappearing since 1970.
Sadly there are many reasons for the deaths of these amazing species. These include overfishing, conflict between humans and wildlife and the destruction of habitats. The impacts of climate change have also made their mark.
Go wild for your planet
On 5th June WWF in the UK will be celebrating Wear it Wild day to create awareness and raise money to protect species such as elephants, tigers, turtles and their habitats.
They are encouraging people to dress tough like a tiger, get flashy like a flamingo or strut their stuff like a snow leopard – so dust off the fancy dress and help WWF reach their goal to double the number of wild tigers to at least 6,000 by 2022 – the next Chinese year of the tiger.
