What does every child want for Christmas ? Some expensive and electronic gaming device ? Something that all of their friends have ? Or, how about a personal chat with Santa Claus, Mrs Claus and their Elves ? For a lot of children, they can go and visit Santa in his grotto on many high streets or go to their friends houses for a party and have Santa visit them.
But, for many children, this is just not possible. Many children this year will be spending time in hospital for many and various reasons. They will not be able to see the lights in town centres, nor visit Santa in his grotto. Christmas Day, which should be a cacophony of noise with children excitedly unwrapping presents, will be quiet in those households who have children in the many children’s wards at hospitals ,or in dedicated hospitals.
However, for many lucky children, we will be bringing Santa to their hospitals, not by sleigh, but by the magic of Cisco TelePresence. Every year, for the last 10 years, we have run an event called Connected Santa (#connectedsanta) where we visit around 10-15 hospitals in the UK and Ireland and children (and parents!) can chat with Santa in his grotto, without them having to leave their hospitals.
Using Cisco technologies, (TelePresence, SPARK, Jabber), this event is run entirely by Cisco volunteers, who dress up as elves and visit the hospitals. Cisco employees also contribute to a gift list at John Lewis to ensure that at each hospital visited, children will get an early Christmas present from Santa and his Elves.
Why do we do this ? Purely to see the look of enjoyment and the faces of children that will not be spending their Christmas Day at home…priceless 😀Tags:
