Cisco Small Cell Solutions helping with Health care in Scotland

December 7, 2015

With the increased demands on the network, service providers are investing in small cell solutions to help optimise consumer and business services on mobile devices across 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi networks.

Cisco Small Cell solutions apply architectural innovation to mobile networking, transforming small cells into a platform for service innovation. These solutions are innovative, easy to deploy, and can deliver real value to our customers.

John Shaw who manages health care in Scotland is very excited about how Cisco innovation with Small Cell technology can help health organisation’s deliver on their key priorities.

Healthcare organisations are continually battling conflicting priorities. Their customers tell them they need to focus on delivering high quality patient care, preventing infections, maintaining hospital security, and ensuring patient safety – all with extremely stretched resources.

John is always talking about the importance to the Health boards of delivering the correct information when required to clinicians delivering patient care, typically at the patient’s bedside ensuring they can provide their clinicians with the right information at the right place. Small Cell extends the mobile network into every location. This solves the current issue that hospitals and health centres have with mobile coverage within their buildings. This enables consistent delivery of critical information and applications to clinicians enabling them to provide real time patient care and enhancing the productivity of all care givers. Patient’s benefit in a number ways, better quality care, faster treatments, patients involved in clinical process and also providing enhanced communications to family and friends.

John is working closely with a Scottish Health board to pilot Small Cell technology at a hospital with limited mobile coverage and early results have been very positive. The feedback from the clinicians has been very encouraging and they are pushing for the trial to be extended to all their sites.

The pilot involves deploying a Small Cell module into existing Cisco Wireless Access Point’s in the hospital these modules connect back to the mobile operator via the existing hospital Cisco network and across the internet. This has extended the Mobile operators coverage to the entire pilot area.

John is delighted by the success of this pilot and believes this technology will be adopted by the majority of the Scottish Health boards. John who has been pleasantly surprised by the simplicity and ease of deployment of the Small Cell solution already has identified other use cases for this technology in Health care in Scotland.
