Building a Career, and a Community, with Confidence

3 min read

This is a guest post from Kimberley Nabwami, High Touch Operations Analyst and co-lead for Connect Black Professionals, Cisco UK & Ireland.

Navigating the corporate world can be daunting. When I first started, finding my voice and making a strong impression didn’t come easily to me. I was an apprehensive newcomer, wondering if I truly belonged in such a fast-paced environment. However, at Cisco UK & Ireland, I didn’t just find a job, I found the encouragement to step forward and the space to forge my own unique path.

From Apprenticeship to Impact

My journey at Cisco began in 2021 through our cross-functional, rotational apprenticeship programme. Balancing a degree in Digital Tech Solutions while working across various departments was challenging, but it was exactly what I needed to cultivate my discipline and resourcefulness.

It was my first corporate environment, and I quickly learned that at Cisco, you are empowered to take ownership of your career from day one. I was encouraged to embrace new opportunities and be courageous, a philosophy that has remained a constant throughout my time here.

The Power of Networking and Sponsorship

One of the most valuable aspects of my early career was the exposure I received to the wider organisation. I was able to build relationships across different functions and seniority levels, which opened doors I didn’t even know existed. Having the chance to network with leadership, as well as colleagues at all stages of their careers, has been incredibly valuable.

I also learned the true meaning of sponsorship. Connecting with Sam Oliver, VP of People & Communities, was a turning point for me. It gave me a deeper understanding of how mentorship and sponsorship align with Cisco’s culture, providing me with clear career planning and a deeper sense of belonging within our community.

Championing Representation

Beyond my day-to-day responsibilities as a High Touch Operations Analyst (HTOM), I am deeply passionate about my work with the Connect Black Professionals (CBP) network. In October 2025, I was honoured to be invited to co-lead this community, a role I take very seriously.

Coming from a working-class background, I didn’t see many people with similar experiences in these spaces. That’s why this work is so important to me. I want to be that representation for others who come after me. Whether it’s collaborating with the Connected Disability Awareness Network (CDAN) on a Wellbeing Webinar or partnering with local charities, I’ve found that my professional identity is shaped by the impact we have when we come together for a bigger cause. I’m not just building a career; I’m building a brand and a community.

My Advice to the Next Generation

If I could give one piece of advice to those just starting out, it would be simple: Get out of your head and go for it.

Working with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team was a defining moment for me. Meeting young women and girls aspiring to careers in tech helped me narrow down my own interests and discover my strengths. I’ve learned that it’s natural to have doubts, but it is far better to try and learn from failure than to avoid taking chances, especially early in your career when there is so much to gain.

Looking Ahead

Balancing community leadership with a demanding day job isn’t always easy, but I’m supported by an incredible team. We all understand the commitment we’ve made and why we’re here; when things get hectic, we rely on each other.

There is always more work to be done. We can continually improve in terms of equity, representation, and access to opportunities. However, I’m proud to say that Cisco truly embodies these values, they have our backs. I’m excited to keep growing, keep advocating, and keep showing others that they, too, can build a career and a community with confidence.
