This week in mobility – 12th June

1 min read

So, what have we learnt from the mobility news this week? Facebook caught everyone’s attention, as they announced a roll out of Place Tip, giving businesses a new way to push messages to nearby smartphones. Also, Nationwide demonstrated just how ahead of the game they are, becoming the first high street financial services firm to offer an Apple Watch app. Elsewhere, researchers managed to use ambient WiFi signals to power a surveillance camera. So much in only a week!

…but there’s more…

News broke yesterday that police are using fake mobile towers to spy on UK phone users. Known as Stingrays, the fake masts trick passing phones into connecting and revealing data. No comment from the Met Police so far.

A consumer sim card that automatically connects to whichever network offers the best signal is set to go on sale soon. Similar services already exist for business users, but UK start-up Anywhere Sim plan to launch their consumer-priced service within five weeks.

Apple’s next-generation iPhone 7 will be released in September, according to a leaked communication. The document, allegedly sent to Vodafone employees, claims that the ‘new iPhone” will go on sale on 25 September, with pre-orders from 18 September.

And last, but definitely not least, EE are allowing customers to add a wider range of products to 4G plans as they continue to grow this market. They already have more than 31 million connections to their network, but the firm is looking to make connected devices the driver of their growth. For instance the 4GEE Action Camera, letting you broadcast your adventures on 4G!
