Perhaps you’ve noticed things have been a bit… slow in the world of mobility this week. Anyone using O2 will know the issues they have been experiencing, and businesses in Westminster have slammed BT for poor performance too. So, welcome news indeed that our mobile networks could be about to receive a speed boost. Ofcom plan to auction off a further 190MHz of spectrum to deal with the UK’s growing demand for 4G.
As we move towards an ever more mobile world, good connectivity is vital. Our own VNI report released this week shows that Internet growth is booming, but to take advantage of this we need reliable connections.
Elsewhere, there were fresh woes for iPhone users, as it was revealed that a simple text message could cause phones to reboot.
In other news this week:
- The march of the connected shopping experience continues to make life easier for consumers and more profitable for businesses. Tesco has announced it is trialling a system that pushes discount offers to passing punters. Would receiving unexpected offers like this encourage you to change your direction of travel?
- Apple has hinted at something tantalising in store for us further down the road, with SVP Jeff Williams quoted as saying: “The car is the ultimate mobile device.” We know they had made some steps with CarPlay, but what could Apple have in mind next? Perhaps more will be revealed at the upcoming Recode Code Conference.
- We all know that smartphones are popular, but with Gartner reporting that over 336 million were sold in the first quarter of 2015, current growth is staggering. Increased iPhone sales mean Greater China is now, somewhat surprisingly, Apple’s largest market. But can connectivity infrastructure keep pace?
That’s it from me this week – but don’t forget to let me know what you think of this week’s mobility roundup. Would you let Apple drive you home?
