First day of activities at Cisco Live Cancun: Superheroes have started the flight

Yesterday, Cancun welcomed five thousand IT professionals and experts from different countries of Latin America and the world. These heroes are here to experience a transformational week of learning and networking to keep advancing the challenging journey to digital transformation.

It was a hot and busy first day. Lovers of bits and bytes attended the technical seminars that deeply addressed different engaging topics like collaboration hybrid architectures, data center containers, the new digital network architecture Cisco DNA, and next-generation firewalls.

After lunch, 120 IT leaders met in Cloud Day, where they could learn how to optimize the use of technology through the cloud. Rodolfo Molina, Cloud Managing Director for Latin America, was in charge of presenting the most relevant findings of a recent IDC’s report, which says that 94% of organization will use multiple clouds in the medium term, and just 11% of them have an optimized cloud strategy in place today. That’s why Cisco has provided customers with BCA (Bussiness Cloud Advisor), a tool built together with IDC that allows organizations to take a snapshot of the current cloud adoption and get a customized report with benchmarks and recommendations.

Cloud Day also opened a slot in the agenda to talk about the new Cisco-Google alliance; these two firms will provide a unique and open hybrid cloud to deploy, organize, and protect applications –on-premise and hosted in Google’s cloud- providing Cisco’s security and maintenance in it.

In the afternoon, the Cisco Solution Makers were awarded in a special ceremony. This initiative is led by the engineering area Netacad, which invited Mexican college students to solve real-world problems of the construction and finance services industries by using Cisco’s technology. Seven teams participated, from public and private universities in Guadalajara and the State of Mexico.

Prototypes presented by these young Mexican students were amazing, proving that their creativity has no limits. Cronos, a 4-member team of the Autonomous University of Guadalajara, was the winner – it presented a solution based on an app that uses sensors and enabled by Meraki and Cisco Spark, which allows construction companies to better plan the movement of heavy equipment using real-time information, and making more intelligent and fast decisions. These innovative students will receive a Meraki Access Point, be invited to participate in Cisco Live, and take the Cisco Startup course.

Ruba Borno, Vice President, Growth Initiatives and Chief of Staff to CEO, closed the activities of the first day. Borno highlighted how technology has helped people and organizations to be connected even in crisis moments, like in the recent earthquake that impacted Mexico City on September 19th. She also invited attendees to retweet a video posted in her account @rubaborno. Cisco will donate US$5 to @HabitatMexico for ever tweet in benefit of affected people.

Ruba said Cisco is helping organizations in this new era of intelligence through a secure platform that enable digital businesses. The network will play a pivotal role in technology and business strategy, allowing companies to use all the information produced in order to take more intelligent and faster decisions.

Tomorrow will be a busy day: special events for verticals like government, education, finance services, manufacturing and retail.
