This Week in Mobility – November 28 2014
It’s been a marvellous week for all things mobility – Israeli company StoreDot has announced it’s developing a battery to deliver a day’s power to a smartphone in just 30 seconds by 2016, the beautiful Cornish coast is set to receive 35 new phone masts to boost mobile coverage and the much-loved iPhone feature Siri has been revealed as a serious rap talent.
But that’s not all – this week has seen a stack of stories across the media that really highlight how mobile is changing the way we work and live. Here are my top three picks:
New research by Telstra this week has confirmed that employee demand for mobility is reaching dizzying new heights. The research revealed that more than half of UK workers expect their IT department to offer them remote access, 60% said mobility was a key demand whilst 48% expect desktop virtualisation as standard.
Network Rail has asked Ofcom to grant powers to extend its existing national fibre network outside of its own land, for the benefit of mobile providers. The network would be to be used to improve mobile connectivity along rail corridors and will offer wholesale services to other telecom operators.
German scientists have proposed that unused TV frequencies could be used to submit public WiFi signals at no cost. The white space between TV channels operates on a similar spectrum to 4G networks, and has already been used for the basis of a project in India that has brought free WiFi to two districts.
