This week in mobility – 12 September 2014

September 12, 2014

Apple once again dominated the news this week with its iPhone 6 and Apple Watch announcements. The rumour mill and resulting media furore surrounding Apple’s announcements is always a sight to behold, and this week was no different. The introduction of the Apple Watch showed the world that wearable technologies are now very firmly set in the mainstream. Although, I’ll admit to a little disappointment in their marketing – all beauty and no benefits. Sending someone your heartbeat… really!?

This week we discuss the impact this has had on the mobility space, along with the latest news:

Amidst all the chat about screen size and scratch resistance, one game-changer went comparatively unnoticed – the iPhone 6’s use of Gigabit Wi-Fi. This standard allows for much faster wireless connections on a less crowded band. Beauty is skin-deep. The ability to deliver more information – that’s what is truly new in the iPhone 6.

Recent research illustrates than many still view the benefits of mobility from a ‘fixing problems’ perspective as apposed to innovating; 46% cite office cost reduction vs only 32% for a more skilled workforce and 25% for extending hours of service. It may have something to do with who commissioned the research.

Capgemini and virtualisation firm VMware have announced a strategic partnership which will see them deliver an AirWatch-powered mobility management service for enterprise customers. The partnership is an extension of the two companies’ existing relationship in the enterprise cloud space, and AirWatch will allow for a central console where workers can access all content on any device.
