The happy, healthy life of the globally connected business professional
Having read a recent article in the Economist about “The sad, sick life of the business traveller” I considered writing a blog about the benefits of the world that I live in utilizing my personal DX80 at home or one of the many Immersive TelePresence screens in the various Cisco offices.
However I deferred the writing of this blog deliberately, not because I couldn’t think of any useful to say (although you will be the judge of that…) it was that I wanted to reacquaint myself with the “luxury” of travel in the name of business again and to see if it really is as “great” as I remember it. With a recent, however thankfully rare trip to Las Vegas in my diary, what better time to write my blog…
Starting with a positive, with a young family I do love the rare luxury of being able to watch a film for its duration, something a long haul flight does offer. That said, I tend not to sit outside my local cinema or my own living room for 3-4 hours prior to watching a film. That’s before I even get inside where the definition of “personal space” is redefined with the person in front continually moving their seat back and forth, and the person next to me asking “do you mind?” as they get up from their seat for tenth time and knock the screen as they squeeze through a gap my cat would struggle with in the process. Oh how quickly we forget the luxuries of business travel…
But wait, once the film has finished, I will be able to catch up on all my work surely. Sadly not, I still have my laptop that has about as much battery life in it as my child’s light saber on Christmas night and not to mention the fact that despite being surrounded by clouds I cannot seem to get to most of the data I need. So not only I am not able to spend time with my family, I am not even really able to be productive during my travels.

family, but the comfort of my home office. Everything was there, my DX80, my virtual office connection, together with my collection of business books that I must get around to reading one day…
Yes, having this flexibility and capability to work remotely with the power of video may mean I occasionally work longer hours, however for the main I have time to see my family. Together with having quiet time to think, to work, and to be productive. Yet with a click of a button I can be engaged in a video chat with my US colleagues. Not a video image the size of a postage stamp, no a full blown HD video link providing a life size view of the person or people I am talking to. With the recent announcement of the partnership between Apple and Cisco, I can imagine the potential of having the benefits my home office extended to my iPad and iPhone in the not too distant future. For me, Cisco TelePresence addresses all but one challenge that flying on business presents. That one issue yet to be resolved is time zones, however at least when I finish a video call at home late into the night I can take the short walk up the stairs to bed, rather than another long haul flight.

Great blog Ian! I too relish the DX80 on my desk at home for the flexibility it gives me to work from home and balance the many demands on my time from family, friends, customers and colleagues! Too few companies empower their employees with a flexible working culture, and the technology that enables it, in spite of the very obvious benefits this generates through increased productivity not to mention employee engagement and loyalty.
