What drew an experienced Registered Nurse to work at Cisco?

December 12, 2012

I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Shanti Gidwani, and I am a Registered Nurse.

I’ve had amazing experiences in my career, working with patients as young as three days old, new mothers, teenagers, young adults, geriatric patients and even patients suffering from HIV/AIDS. I’ve worked in Canada, Nepal, Africa and Europe in various healthcare capacities. I can tell you that these experiences have given me a lot of insight into the healthcare problems we face today.

So why is a Registered Nurse working at a company known for networking technology? It’s simple. Cisco is helping change the future of healthcare.

One factor that may contribute to Cisco’s dedication to healthcare stems from the fact that our CEO’s parents were both physicians – something he and I have in common. Indeed, there is something about that kind of dinner conversation that really sticks with you. I tend to think that it’s also because health affects each and every one of us – no matter who you are, or what you do. High blood pressure, heart disease, a broken bone, cancer or even HIV do not discriminate between us.

For a long time now I have felt the frustration of a healthcare system not able to do enough. Accessibility, sustainability, quality of care, wait times, insufficient health promotion and prevention programs are some of the many problems that keep me up at night, and I know I am not alone. I am certain that every healthcare administrator and politician in the healthcare space across Canada feels the same way.

So why did I choose Cisco? Because I believe that many of the issues we are facing in healthcare today can be improved by technology. Telehealth, intelligent information systems, comprehensive and accessible electronic health records, collaboration tools and more – all of this technology that Cisco knows so well can help to change the way we deliver healthcare.

So let me re-introduce myself. My name is Shanti Gidwani, and I am a Registered Nurse. I’m also the National Senior Director of Healthcare Solutions for Cisco Canada.

I look forward to sharing more about healthcare and technology in subsequent posts, and encourage you to voice your thoughts. Do you think technology can help improve our healthcare system? Please leave a comment below
